We are dedicated to promoting forest-based economic development in Montreal Lake Cree Nation to create wealth, employment, and self sufficiency for a prosperous community for the present and future generations. Our goal is to enhance capacity of our members to participate in forest-based business by providing them with entrepreneurial opportunities, skill development and education while utilizing forest resources in a way that is environmentally sustainable, cooperative, accountable and transparent.
Kaskew is certified through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. The program is composed of principles, objectives and performance measures designed to broaden the practice of sustainable forestry among participants. Through the program we provide an annual report to the SFI that allows the public to monitor our progress in achieving the SFI programs objectives.
SFI Inc. is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management. They work with conservation groups, local communities, resource professionals, landowners, and countless other organizations and individuals who share the passion for responsible forest management.
SFI’s forest certification standard is based on principles that promote sustainable forest management, including measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk, and Forests with Exceptional Conservation Value.
The standard is used widely across North America, and has strong acceptance in the global marketplace so they can deliver a steady supply of wood and paper products from legal and responsible sources. This is especially important at a time when there is growing demand for green building and responsible paper purchasing, and less than 10 percent of the world’s forests are certified.
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® is a comprehensive, independent certification program that works with environmental, social and industry partners to improve forest practices in North America and fiber sourcing worldwide.
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® is based on 14 core principles that promote sustainable forest management, including measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk and Forests with Exceptional Conservation Value.
We envision a future where cooperation and partnerships will successfully supply the means to become an economically viable and independent Cree Nation through long-term sustainable forestry based business development. We are committed to creating economic advancement within the community so that future generations will prosper.
